Tell us a little bit about yourselves and your family:
Neither of us are originally from this area. We moved here to take jobs after college at the paper mill in Bastrop in the early 1980’s. We both were employed as engineers at the mill. My husband is from Mississippi and a graduate of Mississippi State, and I grew up in south Louisiana and am a Louisiana Tech alumni. We moved to Ouachita Parish in 2007. Sam, our son (our only child), was attending Ouachita Christian and in high school at the time, and we made the decision to move closer to his school. I retired in 2009, after the paper mill closed, but my husband continues to work for another paper company spending most of his time working and travelling out of town as a project engineer. Our son is also an alumni of Louisiana Tech graduating in mechanical engineering and now lives in south Louisiana.
What kinds of things do you and your family enjoy doing?
My husband and son are avid outdoorsmen enjoying hunting and fishing. We are also avid golfers and spend a lot of time playing together. We are passionate about our family and our time together.
How long have you been a Food Bank donor?
We began supporting the Food Bank many years ago through the United Way campaign sponsored at the paper mill each year. We began supporting the Food Bank with direct donations in 2009. We have continued to support the Food Bank all these many years because we believe in its mission and want to help our community.
Why do you choose to support your community through the Food Bank of NELA?
We just try to be charitable because it is the right thing to do. We have been blessed with a comfortable and happy life and try to do what we can to pay that forward. The Food Bank serves such a large area providing a helping hand to people all over northeast Louisiana to ensure that they have food. So we support those efforts to help them help our community. Food is such a big part of our culture in Louisiana that it’s difficult to know that hunger is a daily struggle for many in our community. We support the Food Bank and their efforts to ease that burden and meet that need of so many in our area.
