Summer 2018 is here! After an absolutely beautiful spring, the temperatures heated up quickly, the love bugs arrived, and suddenly it was the end of another school year. Most of us can remember as a child that feeling of excited anticipation when school let out and our whole summer vacation stretched out before us. As a kid, I loved family cookouts, fresh corn on the cob, and enjoyed the best tomatoes I’ve ever tasted picked right from my dad’s garden.
However, I know too well that for over 23,000 food insecure kids in our community, summer is not a carefree season full of fun and abundant summertime food. Instead, summer vacation is a time of anxiety, worry and scarcity as parents juggle the cost of extra childcare and higher electric and grocery bills. Because when school is on hiatus, so are the free school meals that are so nourishing for children. Here at the Food Bank, we worry about kids all year long, but especially during the summer months.
Food is the essential fuel that helps our kids reach their full potential, adults meet their responsibilities and our beloved senior citizens stay active and healthy. Every dollar, every can of food and every volunteer hour will make a difference to a neighbor in need this summer. Thank you for taking action and for your compassionate support of our mission.
P.S. We are so grateful for your support, and humbly ask for your help in addressing summer hunger. A $30 gift will provide 165 meals. At 3 meals a day over 3 summer months away from school, a $30 gift will provide a child 3 meals/day for 55 days!
