Virginia was an administrative assistant for 25 years. She had a long career in office management. She thought she was set for retirement, but that’s not exactly how it worked out.
“I’ve been through so much,” she said. That includes a triple heart bypass, liver cirrhosis, hepatitis C and the loss of her husband. And because of her health problems, Virginia doesn’t have much money left at the end of the month for food, as much of her fixed income goes to medical bills. What’s worse is that Virginia lives so far from the grocery store, it’s hard to actually get there.
“If you’ve got plenty of money, you can drive into town to get groceries,” she said. “But because of my limited income I can’t.” So, she visits a food pantry in Farmerville, Louisiana, which works with the Food Bank of Northeast Louisiana, a member of the Feeding America network.
“We get meat, chicken, turkey, pork chops here,” Virginia said. “If it weren’t for the pantry, I wouldn’t be eating.”
Even with everything Virginia has been through, she tries to stay positive. “This helps a whole lot,” she said. “And as long as you’ve got healthy meals to eat, you can live a long time.”
